In this color theory intensive you will learn to SEE color more clearly, SHOOT color with accuracy, and EDIT color in Lightroom with creativity and control.

Understanding how color behaves is key to confident editing and shooting. In Editing for Artists you will learn subtle color control through the mindset of a painter, working with the HSL Color Mixer, Tone Curve, White Balance and Point Color as your palette.  Perfect the Art of Seeing through deep self-critique to push your own personal boundaries and confidence with editing. Utilize color theory in Lightroom to correct color casts, analyze color relationships, and separate colors for more sensitive and dynamic color range in your work. Finally, embrace a no-short-cut approach to editing - one that will bring every image to light as a singular work of art.

In this not-to-be-missed class be prepared to take risks, try different editing and shooting approaches, and bravely reinvent color in new ways.

    • Personalized in-depth video critique feedback on both assignments (for Guided Students), including plans for revision and refinement

    • Multiple practice exercises that receive written dialogue, encouragement & feedback

  • LIGHTROOM CLASSIC is required for Editing for Artists participants, as well as a basic understanding of how to use it (i.e., it is assumed that students can upload and catalog images and use keywords).

A solid understanding of manual shooting with a DSLR to achieve accurate exposure is strongly suggested to gain the greatest understanding of the concepts presented: creative edits over corrective edits.

  • Interactive classes are held online and registration opens seasonally.

Guided students can participate fully in class, by asking questions, submitting assignments, and getting personalized feedback from your teacher.

Independent students have full access to class content and can participate in class discussions —they just don’t get teacher critique and feedback on images or assignments.

MEET THE TEACHER

Roxanne

Bryant

I'm Roxanne! In 2025, my course Editing for Artists, hit its 10th consecutive year of enrollment.

As a photographer and painter for over 20 years, my creative background is studio art based, focused on painting, photography and design.

After a career as a designer in NYC, I pursued an MFA in Art Education, and have taught an array of fine arts including painting, drawing, graphic design, photography, and printmaking in public, private, and boarding schools throughout New England.

My experience in painting and art education, as well as my passion for working with artists of all skill levels deeply informs the way I photograph, edit, and focus on color theory today.

Understanding color theory is crucial to crafting an emotive, well-executed photo.  Many professional artists have no experience in color theory; it's my goal to help artists create pointed and powerful edits in their unique creative voice, without the industry standard of presets.

Currently, I live and work in coastal Rhode Island with my husband (we met in a film darkroom at college 28 years ago!), and two teens. I teach and photograph families year-round throughout New England and beyond.

REMIND ME

What other students had to say

Roxanne's color theory/editing class was more than I could have hoped for. She's a gifted artist and teacher and holds nothing back. Her generosity in time and patience did not go unnoticed...answering every question in detail, most times above what was asked. Each lesson was clear and easy to understand and built seamlessly upon the one before. I walked away with so much more control over my art...and with a much clearer vision when creating. I'm now able to claim the entire process from start to finish without the use of presets. I recommend this class to anyone craves growth.

I’m so grateful I finally made it into this class. It was such an eye-opening experience. I lacked the vocabulary to be able to express what colours I felt represented me as an artist and the technical skill to be able to achieve exactly what I had in my mind's eye. This course certainly delivered. Roxanne was incredibly generous with her time and feedback and I felt very supported throughout. I have left with what feels like a wealth of knowledge and a want to continue exploring colour as a way of expressing myself as an artist.

Editing for Artist's was an incredible class! Roxanne's knowledge of color theory and how to apply it to your own work was impeccable! The thought process behind everything made so much sense! I learned to really SEE my surroundings first and then Roxanne gives you the knowledge and tools to apply it in your post-processing. Coming from an art background myself this was a breath of fresh air to come back to the foundations of color and remember how to make them work for you. I now feel more confident in my editing than I ever have!
